2024 Strategic Moment of Reflection (SMR)

The leadership of the Evangelical-Lutheran Local Church Community had a strong vision of
peace, justice and inclusion. As a faith based organisation our mission is to act out divine
love in public. We started as a volunteer coordination channeling the good will and solidarity
of citizens. In 2022 we received financial support from UNHCR, the ELCA, the City of
Budapest, and other organisations to build capacity and organise the professional
assistance of the forcefully displaced people.

During these 2 years we built up a trauma aware community space where displaced people
could receive assistance in dignity. We empower people to build up a sustainable life here in
Budapest, helping them get access to national services like health care and education. We
could integrate our new service to the network of other humanitarian service providers.
We mobilised the general public to donate for the people fleeing war. We advocated through
our civic connections and the church communities to create a welcoming counterculture in
Hungary facing government led hate speech against migrants and political statements
supporting the aggressor in the war.
